2002 (Kingswood) Sqn Parent’s & Prizegiving Evening 2017

On the evening of April 6th 2017, 2002 (Kingswood) Squadron paraded in front of their proud parents.

It was a fantastic evening where the parents were treated to an excellent continuity drill display, followed by cadet presentations and a demonstration of their award-winning First Aid.

Also in attendance was Guest of Honour, Major J Flexman of the United States Air Force.

The event was successfully capped off with an award ceremony, followed by cheese and wine (for the parents!).

Activity First Aid

Seven staff and 11 cadets successfully completed a two day Activity First Aid course.

Thanks go to FL Dave Shaddick (SWR) for travelling up and making it possible to run the course. Dave will be running another Activity First Aid Assessor course in the near future. There was a lot of interest from the course staff and senior cadets in becoming assessors. This would be a major benefit to the Wing because we could run more courses and spread out geographically.

The next Wing course is a Heartstart Instructor Course on 19 June 2016 at 2152 SHQ.

Increasing our capability to save lives

Nine staff and four cadets successfully achieved their St John Ambulance Activity First Aid qualification after completing an intensive two day course at 2002 (Kingswood) Squadron. They can now train and assess cadets on Youth First Aid courses.

Four staff and three cadets also completed a one day AED course and now know how to save lives using this increasingly available equipment.

First aid is a core part of the training syllabus. Several cadets and staff have employed the skills they learned on an ATC course to respond to an emergency.

Thanks go to PO Alan Shepherd (2002 Sqn) and FL Dave Shaddick (SW Region) for organising the courses.

New Heartstarters

Seven staff and five cadets from eight different units recently qualified as Heartstart instructors after a course run at 2002 (Kingswood) Squadron. They can train cadets and staff in basic lifesaving techniques using equipment loaned by the British Heart Foundation. Heartstart is a ‘hands on’ course that is extremely popular with cadets. Several cadets from the Wing employed first aid skills they learned with the ATC to save lives. Our aim is equip all cadets and all staff with these vital skills.

First Aid Training Capability Boosted

Eighteen cadets and staff achieved St John Ambulance Activity First Aid qualifications after successfully passing a course held at 93 (City of Bath) Squadron. Four other personnel qualified as HeartStart instructors. The courses strengthen the ability of Bristol and Gloucestershire Wing to deliver first aid training to its cadets and staff.

Air Cadet Instructors Give Year 11 Students Life Saving Skills

A team of RAF Air Cadet instructors from Bristol and Gloucestershire Wing recently trained over ninety Year 11 students at Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre in basic life saving skills.

The British Heart Foundation’s Heartstart course was part of their Year 12 - Sixth Form Induction Day. During the course, students learned how to deal with a variety of situations including an unconscious casualty and administering CPR. Squadron Leader David Morgan said “We were delighted to work in partnership with Newent Community School, their behaviour, interest and good humour was second-to-none. Statistically several of the students are very likely to be in situations where people are injured or taken ill.

The Heartstart skills will help them to save a life. If anyone is interested in becoming a cadet or adult instructor with the RAF Air Cadets, please contact Bristol and Gloucestershire Wing ATC on 01452 721237 during office hours.
