Road Marching Success at RAF Cosford

May 2, 2018 by 649 (Dursley) Squadron

Sixteen cadets and four staff from 13 squadrons around Bristol and Gloucestershire Wing successfully completed the RAF WARMA two-day march at RAF Cosford on the 21st and 22nd of April. Two teams formed from the Wing for the event, which covered approximately 25 miles each day, totalling 50 miles overall.

The event, which aims to promote walking as a sport within the Royal Air Force and its sister services, brings people together from around the world who have been or who have served in the armed forces, cadet forces and civilians. President of the Association, Air Commodore Dawn McCafferty CBE Tweeted, “Hats off to all cadets and staff who completed 40 or 80km. I managed 32km in between saluting duties and I was on my knees!”

Cadet Flight Sergeant Griffin, 2002 (Kingswood) Squadron, said “It was an extremely challenging event, it really pushed all of us to our limits! However, on completion, it was extremely rewarding and gave us all a real sense of achievement!” On arrival back to RAF Cosford, the cadets received their bronze road marching badges and a commemorative medal. A team medal was also awarded for the effort as everyone completed both days of the march.

Training has taken place fortnightly within the Wing to prepare the cadets for success. For some of the cadets who plan to complete the Nijmegen march of 100 miles over four days, the two-day march was the first hurdle to prove their physical ability. Those who hope to progress to the 100 mile march carried an extra 10kg of weight each on top of food, drink and waterproofs to be eligible.

All cadets involved would agree with Cadet Corporal Perkins, 2342 (Innsworth) Squadron, when he said “thanks to the staff for their continued support both in the training and at the march. We couldn’t have done it without their hard work and expertise, or indeed their extensive knowledge of marching songs that helped to keep us motivated over the weekend.”
